buildingSMART International Chapter Leader Profile
First name: Mladen
Last name: Vukomanović
Chapter: Croatia
Role in the Chapter: Chairman
Where are you based?
I am based in Croatia, with most of our Chapter’s activities centralized in Zagreb. This location allows us to engage closely with both local stakeholders and regional professionals.
When was your first interaction or involvement with buildingSMART?
My first interaction with buildingSMART was in 2020. I was inspired by its mission of advancing open standards and interoperability, which aligned closely with my professional goals in improving collaboration in the construction and built environment sectors.
Tell us a little about your work history/professional journey, and how it led you to buildingSMART.
I started my career in AEC domain, focusing on project management. Over time, I realized the importance of open standards to bridge the gaps between stakeholders and reduce inefficiencies in the construction process. This led me to advocate for openBIM and eventually join buildingSMART to create more sustainable, collaborative industry practices.
What do you like the most about the work you do within your Chapter?
What I enjoy most is seeing the tangible impact of our efforts—whether it's a successful workshop that inspires professionals, a project adopting openBIM principles, or creating connections between individuals who drive change. The ability to shape the digital transformation locally while contributing to a global community is incredibly rewarding.
What would you say are the biggest successes or milestones to date within your Chapter?
Some key milestones include translation of BIM Dictionary, lunching professional certification program, hosting BIM workshops and conferences and gaining recognition from universities and local companies.
What does openBIM mean to you personally?
To me, openBIM represents a paradigm shift in how we design, build, and manage assets. It emphasizes inclusivity, transparency, and collaboration—enabling all stakeholders, regardless of their tools or expertise, to contribute meaningfully to the lifecycle of a built environment.
What overriding challenge(s) do you see the community facing today?
The biggest challenge is overcoming resistance to change. Many stakeholders are hesitant to adopt new workflows or invest in training. Additionally, achieving universal interoperability is complex, especially with proprietary systems and varying levels of digital maturity worldwide.
What challenge(s) do you encounter within your Chapter?
One challenge is raising awareness and understanding of openBIM among smaller companies and public institutions. Another is aligning our efforts with government policies to ensure standards are both promoted and implemented effectively.
What do you see as the main opportunities for your market?
Our market has immense potential to leverage openBIM for sustainable development, particularly in infrastructure modernization and urban planning. Croatia's commitment to EU regulations and green initiatives also provides a strong framework for digital transformation.
With digitalization becoming more prevalent, how is your Chapter addressing the challenges and opportunities it brings?
We are focusing on education and capacity-building by organizing workshops, conferences and certification programs. We also collaborate with technology providers to adjust tools to our local needs while aligning with international best practices.
What are your visions and/or aspirations for the future, both for your Chapter and for buildingSMART internationally?
For our Chapter, I envision becoming a central hub for BIM expertise and innovation in Croatia, actively influencing national policies and industry standards. Internationally, I hope buildingSMART continues to expand its reach, fostering stronger collaboration across countries and sectors.
