The IFC 5 Core project establishes the foundation of a new, modular version of the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) standard. Unlike previous monolithic releases, IFC 5 introduces a clearly separated Core module that defines essential, domain-neutral concepts—such as object identity, spatial structure, referencing, and extensibility. This project is jointly developed by buildingSMART International and ISO/TC 59/SC 13 JWG 12.

The IFC standard is evolving into a modular structure with IFC 5, aiming for better scalability and alignment with digital workflows. This project develops the IFC 5 Core, defining essential concepts for future domain-specific extensions. Work is closely coordinated with ISO, under ISO/TC 59/SC 13 JWG 12, and will result in a new part of the ISO 16739 series. The IFC 5 Core ensures a stable foundation without replacing existing IFC 4.x parts.
